Dr Sebastian Walesch
About
Sebastian Walesch studied pharmacy at the University of Freiburg. For his diploma thesis, he worked on the elucidation of a biosynthetic pathway in Streptomyces as a visiting student in the group of Prof. Peter Leadlay at the University of Cambridge. Between 2018 and 2023, Sebastian completed his doctorate in the research group of Prof Rolf Müller and worked on cultivation-based strategies for the discovery and isolation of bioactive natural products from myxobacteria.
Sebastian then gained some experience in the pharmaceutical industry. At Evotec, he supported the work on the culturomis platform in the search for new antibiotics against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In early 2024, Sebastian returned to the Microbial Natural Products group as a post-doc. In addition to his research, he worked part-time in the in-house start-up MyxoTech in method development and in setting up their fraction collection of myxobacterial extracts.
Sebastian's research includes the development of a high-throughput elicitor screening platform for myxobacteria and the discovery and characterisation of new natural products.
