Spatial expansion of the institute

Since the decision by the federal and state governments to expand the HIPS in 2021, the institute has been in a phase of continuous growth. We are currently expanding the institute's facilities on the campus of Saarland University to provide our scientists with adequate space to implement their research ideas.

More room for new active ingredients

In just three years, the HIPS, together with Saarland University, was able to establish a total of nine additional research groups. In order to quickly and efficiently meet the resulting demand for laboratory space, the spatial expansion is taking place in several construction phases.

First construction phase

In the first phase of construction, the urgently needed laboratory and office space will be built as quickly as possible using a modular construction method. Work on the first phase is already ongoing and should be completed by winter 2025/26. You can follow the construction progress live in the following video:

Second construction phase

In order to find suitable designs and partners for the implementation of the further construction phases, we have carried out a Europe-wide architectural design competition together with [phase]eins. A German-Danish team from the two offices Code of Practice (Berlin) and Christensen & Co. (Copenhagen) was placed first in the competition. The completion of the further construction phases is planned for 2029. These are the designs of the winning team:

The designs of all participants taking part in the competition can be viewed in a virtual exhibition.

Our construction projects are financed by funds from the Saarland and the Federal Republic of Germany.
