Amila studied Biology (Bachelor of Science ) and Bioinformatics (Master of Science).
AT HIPS her work focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanisms by which microRNAs (miRNAs) and extracellular vesicles (EVs) influence cellular and tissue responses to stress and aging-related stimuli. A central aspect of her work involves investigating the effects of doxorubicin treatment on microglia-derived EVs and profiling their miRNA cargo, as well as exploring how Locked Nucleic Acid (LNA)-based inhibition of specific miRNAs modulates these effects.

In parallel, she studies the consequences of microglia depletion in mice using multi-omic approaches—including miRNA profiling, proteomics, and spatial transcriptomics—to better understand how loss of microglial signaling affects brain homeostasis. Additional projects involve targeted LNA inhibition of miR-155 in mouse models and miR-29 in human skin fibroblasts, combining transcriptomic and proteomic analyses to uncover downstream molecular pathways and phenotypic effects. Collectively, her research aims to characterize how miRNA modulation shapes intercellular communication and contributes to aging and stress responses at the cellular and tissue level.
